Roof Ventilation Explained: Why Attic Airflow Matters
The job of ventilation
Roof ventilation lets air move continuously from the eaves (intake) up to the ridge (exhaust). This constant airflow carries away heat in summer and moisture in winter, protecting both the roof from above and the attic and insulation from below.
Why it matters
Without enough airflow, summer heat bakes shingles and accelerates aging, while winter moisture condenses on the underside of the deck and can lead to rot, mould, and ice dams. Balanced ventilation is one of the least expensive ways to extend the life of a roof.
Signs of poor ventilation
Hot upstairs rooms, higher energy bills, damp or frosty attic surfaces, ice dams along the eaves, and curling or early-deteriorating shingles can all point to inadequate airflow. Blocked soffit vents or insulation covering intake openings are common culprits.
